PTA Parent Gift Amnesty - requesting donated items for PTA Events

A great way to get items donated for your events is to run a PTA gift drive or ‘amnesty’. This is most successful when school has started back following the Christmas holidays. There will have been gift duplicates, unsuitable gifts and plain old, unwanted gifts exchanged over the festive season. However, as we all know, one man’s ( or woman’s) trash is another man’s treasure!
What can we ask to be donated in our gift amnesty?
The most common donations are cosmetics, jewellery, make-up, socks, mugs, DVDs, toys and games. Wine, chocolate and biscuits are also popular donations as many people try to lose weight/be healthier in January and want rid of the goodies left over from the festivities.
It is always a good idea to prompt parents on what to donate but be sure to mention that perishables and electrical items are excluded from the gift drive.
What PTA events can benefit from our gift drive?
First off, think about what adult or family events you have coming up. You may have
a ladies pamper night
mother’s day event
a quiz or bingo night
a cinema evening
a race night
a cheese and wine evening
Whatever the event, most will benefit from having:
a) a Tombola
Beauty tombola with cosmetics and other beauty products and jewellery.
Chocolate tombola with donated chocolate or biscuit items.
Combine everything into a Luxury tombola, with wine, chocolate, beauty and jewellery items.
b) a Raffle
Make hampers up with donated items and raffle them off.
Depending on the quality of the items donated, you may want to raffle some items individually but realistically, hamper prizes will be the way to go. You can theme them, a bit like the tombolas above to make it it a bit more interesting. Another idea might be to get the hampers sponsored by local businesses. Businesses could then be promoted at the event, they could attend the event and/or put promotional material in the hamper. This is great for building brand awareness in a family community and could earn you quite a bit of revenue for very little additional effort.
Whatever you decide to do for your fundraising events, it is always worth putting a call out for unwanted, good quality gifts after the Christmas season.
